Establishing Inclusive Learning Enviroments
A teacher establishes, promotes and sustains inclusive learning environments where diversity is embraced and every student is welcomed, cared for, respected and safe. Achievement of this competency is demonstrated by indicators such as using appropriate universal and targeted strategies and supports to address students’ strengths, learning challenges and areas for growth.
My time as a preservice teacher has brought me many opportunities to work with a very diverse group of students. One particular instance I was to instruct a small group of ELL students on the fundamentals of the jigsaw. Since these students knew very little English, I used many differentiation techniques such as body language, drawing of diagrams, and easily understood language while teaching. This group performed very well and by the end of class, had finished cutting out their wooden chair project.
